Introduction

If there's one word to describe the 2010 Adelaide Fringe, it's big. In fact, the 2010 Adelaide Fringe is the biggest in the event's 50-year history.

It's big on numbers, with a 36 percent increase in the number of shows from last year – with 705 different shows featured in the big 2010 Adelaide Fringe guide.

1960 brought us the race to launch a man on the moon and the first Adelaide Festival of Arts. This inaugural program presented a section of 'other activity', including flower shows, swimming races and extraordinary emerging artists.

Fifty years on, this activity is now the largest Arts festival in Australia... the Adelaide Fringe.

The Fringe philosophy remains true today: no selection process - all shows are welcome. I pay tribute to everyone who has been involved with this fantastic festival: Marjorie Fitzgerald, Frank Ford, boards, staff, the Association of Community Theatres, independent artists, producers, dedicated sponsors, and to the sublime Adelaide audiences, who for fifty years have embraced new work.

A special thank you to the current custodians of the awesome 2010 Fringe and to the 700 companies of artists who have taken the plunge to land their latest work here.

I wish you all a deluxe Fringe. It’s my last - so thank you, and ta ta for now. xxx
