Barbara Allen was the Director of the 1998 Adelaide Fringe. Her memory of that year was...

"This Fringe brought new directions and growth with the start of a major expansion of the international performing arts program, the coordination of the largest South Australian Aboriginal arts event ever held, more street performances and major public artworks.

This was the BIG FRINGE that began with the largest parade ever that joined the city from West to East. The Fringe ran its own box office and promoted all the shows on offer. Business sponsors and state and local governments backed the Fringe's developments and the audience supported it through ticket sales beyond our wildest dreams."
