LA MAMA THEATRE in 1990 celebrates 19 years of consistent theatre under the helm of founder and director, Bruno Knez. Steve Berkoff's East is a play of stark reality, a horrifying breath of fresh air which sweeps the audience up in its literacy and theatricality. A production which incorporates mime and does away with the archetypal East End tea cosies and souvenirs of Blackpool on the mantelpiece. It is a play both about and against the East End and its mythologies. It also presents us with those dichotomies which are the backbone of western societies generally - male/female, east/west, fascism/socialism.
