Five women take on the greatest male musicians of the 20th century and reinvent them as sassy, sexy old-school cabaret. This is Midnight Oil, Leonard Cohen, AC/DC, Nine Inch Nails and the Rolling Stones as you've never heard them before, masculinity mixed up in sultry female vocals. With backgrounds in varying musical styles, from opera and musical theatre to jazz, folk and pop, these musicians bring surprising and playful renditions of masculine anthems, inviting the audience to discover new ideas in the lyric and think about how a song can change meaning when sung in a female voice. Lady Sings it Better was born out of a desire to sing passionately about women _x0013_ a simple concept, but one that has grown through the contributions of its members and audiences. At heart, this project is still about gender and sexuality, but it_x0019_ s just as much about celebrating and sharing great music through reinvention, testing the creative limits of the shoe-string budget and nurturing new talent both offstage and on. After sell out runs in Sydney, and gigs for The Festival of the Voice and the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, Lady Sings it Better are heading south and setting their sights on the Adelaide Fringe in 2011. The Ladies can't wait to dust off their heels and bow ties to grace the gorgeous stage at the Prom, and with their swag of songs you're guaranteed a cheeky night of laughter, soulful serenading and a lot of musical mischief! As far as cabaret goes, this particular incarnation by the girls who form Lady Sings It Better is spectacular. Talk about sisters doing it for themselves& the showstopper was just the start of the show. - Vanessa Lahey, Australian Stage Online Lady Sings it Better can be read as a defiant (and in this case by turns witty, touching and sexy) re-reading of mainstream cultural texts. In their acts of gendered ventriloquism and appropriation they took me back to adolescent moments of definable pleasure, singing along to love songs about women, relishing the perversity of the improper pronouns. - Viv McGregor Lady Sings it Better is produced by Blackcat Productions, founded by creative duo Phoebe Meredith and Maeve Marsden at university 8 years ago.
