Sketching North Terrace is a group of urban interventions that transform everyday street architecture, into lively 3-dimensional drawings. ~The humble street bench, covered with white fabric and edged with a black line, stands as a relief from its rendered chalk shadow drawn on the ground. Giving the appearance of a 2-dimensional sketch lifted off the page straight into the busy heart of Adelaide_x0019_ s CBD~ What will you see? Gradually evolving over a two week period, individual objects will be covered on separate days through out the festival. Selected architectural futures, eg light post, bike rack and bench seat, will be covered in a white with black edged fabric coverings. Black cotton will be used to stitch custom made covering to fit these street objects snugly. The objects will still remain functional to their original design, but will take on a drawn appearance and fabric texture. Sketched chalk shadows will be drawn on the pavement to enhance the 3-dimensionallity of the covered objects. Underling Concept - Sketching North Terrace looks to explore how everyday objects/environment can be highlighted through the graphic quality of tracing, sketching and stitching. Presenting the traditional and familiar craft of sewing as a viable public art medium, it seeks to create a tactile experience that is accessible to the general public in their everyday life. A series of temporary works gradually evolving over time brings awareness to the simple origins of an artist practice eg. sketches, drawings and initial ideas. Illustrating the process of making art to the public audience and highlighting the time and effort that goes into the production of a work. Viewers Experience - As business people scurry to work and uni students slowly emerge on the streets, a small artist_x0019_ s work site is constructed before them. The artist and the process of making are placed on display. What is under construction is a tactile fabric installation. Built before their eyes, the audience are exposed to the working process behind a public work. A common object of their everyday environment undergoes a transformation, from a overlooked street bench to a hand crafted form. The hard surface of these existing structures is gradually covered with familiar soft fabric that we wear everyday. An empty park bench now sits outlined with the black and white seams. Kids are enticed to touch; the elderly may look to sit on the comfort of cotton fabric; but even just a passer by may take a second look, as a little bit of their everyday has been altered just enough to catch their attention.
