Phoenix Rising... D. H. Lawrence - Son & Lover
Theatre
Presented by:
GUY MASTERSON'S CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL THEATRE (C.I.T.)
1928, Ile de Port-Cros, Var, France. DH Lawrence lives with his wife Frieda on a small island on the Southern French Coast. A very ill man, less than two years away from untimely death, fulminating against the dying of the light. Complex and self-contradictory, often out of step with his background and education, nevertheless, he was the man behind Sons and Lovers, Lady Chatterley_x0019_ s Lover and The Virgin and the Gypsy. Brilliantly devised and originally directed by Campbell Kay from Lawrence_x0019_ s early writings and the reminiscences of his family, friends and contemporaries, Paul Slack creates the personalities and events which shaped his early life... revealing a man of pathos and exceptional humour, mimicry and storytelling. Passion and poetry abound in this deliriously literate portrait of a vibrant son and romantic lover. Re-directed by Guy Masterson (Goering_x0019_ s Defence, I, Elizabeth) _x001C_ Phoenix Rising is an absorbing insight.... whether miming, singing or acting, Paul Slack gives his Lawrence an immediate vitality in this excellent piece._x001D_ (The Stage) _x001C_ An artfully contrived and skilfully presented exploration of a refreshingly original theme...moving and sensitive._x001D_ (BBC Radio) "Paul Slack gives a totally absorbing portrayal in a moving and artfully scripted piece." (Sir Derek Jacobi)
