Shylock

Theatre
Presented by: GUY MASTERSON'S CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL THEATRE (C.I.T.)

The Australian Premiere of Guy Masterson_x0019_ s new solo show! One of the most globally successful plays of the last 15 years, Shylock reveals the tragic, tempestuous and often unbelievable life of fiction's most famous Jew. Villain...? Victim..? or is Shylock someone even more intriguing? Celebrating the richness of Shakespeare's language and conjuring up a whole cast of characters, Guy Masterson, world renowned solo performer (Under Milk Wood, Animal Farm) now takes on Gareth Armstrong's multi-award winning play, confronting and confounding all the stereotypes. Shylock's only ally - and the only other Jewish man in all of Shakespeare - Tubal, is promoted from his minor role in The Merchant of Venice to centre stage, and proves a born comic storyteller as he leads us through the conflicts and contradictions surrounding his irascible friend. From Portia to Pontius Pilate, from Antonio the merchant, to Adolf Hitler, and from Dracula to the Wandering Jew, this dazzling, moving and witty play is a fascinating exploration of Shylock, Shakespeare and Judaism. This classic and popular production brings Shakespeare to life, history to the forefront and magic to the stage! ***** "An exceptional piece of theatre. Everyone should see it!_x001D_ (Independent on Sunday) ***** "This is as good as theatre gets... undiluted joy and a privilege to watch._x001D_ (Liverpool Post) "It delights, enlightens and dazzles... takes one's breath away. With a leer, a wink, a shrug, he can express more than words can say. In a word& Brilliant!" (Jewish Bulletin San Francisco)
