Urban Duality - Artist statement The dualism within our urban environment fascinates me. It is in the city centre, with high-density living and people from all walks of life travelling in from the suburbs, that powerful contrasts are amplified. This is apparent for both society and the physical environment. The images explore dichotomy, with themes such as old and new, consumerism and poverty, growth and decay, light and shade as well as texture and colour. With this series of diptychs my aim is to provoke questions about urban duality. I chose to pair the images to draw attention to the juxtapositions within the city, to bring a narrative to nature. When two images are placed side by side, there is an interaction between them which only exists when viewed together. Contrasts are heightened, disparity made obvious, and what was once viewed as merely a still life, develops into a story between the city and those who inhabit it. These new narratives establish meaning and hopefully encourage further investigation from viewers. By utilising this method of display I hope to spark people's interest, so that they start to explore the relationships between the subjects within these images and to reconsider their urban surrounds.
