LISETTE & HER FAUX MANOUCHES
Our 2010 Adelaide Fringe shows received a 4 1/2 star review in the Adelaide Advertiser (23 Feb 2010). Here's what they said: Faux Manouches translates as Fake Gypsies, but there_x0019_ s nothing fake about this vocalist and her five-piece backing group. From the opening tango Jealousy it was obvious that Lisette (aka Cat Lawrence) is a fine vocalist with a good range, strong expression and faultless control. She also sings effortlessly in French and Spanish, as well as English, stitching her songs together with an amusing narrative. Her group, led by guitarist Michael Baldwin, provides professional arrangements, making an overall presentation that could be from one of the best European cabarets. John McBeath And here's what Rip It Up had to say of our March 14 show... In a venue so intimate you hoped no-one ordered anything from the cappuccino machine while the band was playing, a coquettish Lisette (Cat Lawrence) took us on a musical journey through her adventurous love life backed by her Faux Manouches. A style of music sourced from the gypsy jazz of Django Rheinhardt, Lisette vamped through an impeccable selection of songs from the likes of Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Roy Orbison and Jaques Brel, deftly making these songs a snug fit for her own story. That Lisette_x0019_ s search for love has taken her all over Europe also afforded an excuse for singing in other languages _x0013_ French, Spanish, and even Ukranian! A most enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Final Word: Magnifique! 2007 Cabaret Festival Lisette & her Faux Manouches performed to sell-out audiences at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival on 20 and 21 June 2007. Other reviews "Maxim's on The Parade has been positively sparkling with the velvety tones of Lisette to the accompaniment of her Faux Manouches." David Grybowski, dB Magazine, 6 January 2010 _x001C_ A genuine tour de force. Les Faux Manouches are hot and Le belle Lisette is par excellence._x001D_ Steve Davenport, The Program, 14 May 2006. _x001C_ Lisette (aka Cat Lawrence) held the eager audience in the Bakehouse in the palm of her hand_x001D_ Fran Edwards, Adelaide Theatre Guide, May 2006. About some of the band members Cat Lawrence and Michael Baldwin worked in The Jo Jump Band in the 1980s playing soul, r'n'b and jazz in many venues around Adelaide including regular Friday nights at the Festival Centre Fezbar. Cat left the band to tour the country and internationally as a singer/dancer with the big musicals Cats and Les Miserables following which she performed in the London West End production of Chicago with Ute Lemper, Joel Grey and Chita Rivera .
