After a successful 2010 Fringe season, the all-female drumming group Matsuri Taiko are back with a new show. 'Matsuri Taiko', meaning 'Festival Drumming', is an appropriate name for this dynamic group from Adelaide; the heart of the festival state, South Australia. The Japanese Drumming group never fail to excite their audiences with their highly energetic and engaging performances that are musically and visually entertaining. Taiko incorporates choreographed and energetic movement to accompany the pulsating rhythm, which demonstrates the sheer strength and power of this electrifying group. Matsuri Taiko delivers an exhilarating performance filled with traditional and contemporary Japanese Drumming. Their repertoire includes traditionally composed pieces, compositions by their Sensei, Kurumaya Masaaki, as well as compositions by members of Matsuri Taiko. Expect a mixture of powerful beating and gentle palpitations that can be heard from percussion instruments of all shapes and sizes, including drums that have been hand-made by members of Matsuri Taiko. 'Urban Soundscapes' combines experiences of modern city culture from both Japan and Australia. Matsuri Taiko combines multimedia with the performance, presenting their experiences of Japan and of Japanese culture within Australia. Expect to be taken on a journey of the senses. "Any doubts as to whether three girls beating drums for an hour could hold the attention are quickly pushed aside as the variety of pace, style and sound comes apparent. The troupe sways effortlessly between peaceful pattering and crashing crescendos, demonstrating each individual's precise skills and grand respect for this ancient art." - George Inglis, 5AA Radio, 2010. "It was clear from the resounding applause that everyone had been swept up by the music... You may have missed Matsuri Taiko at Fringe, but it's well worth looking out for their next performance." - Suzie Keen, Independent Weekly, 2010.
