The Mount Barker Caledonian Society are proud to present the 50th Highland Gathering, bringing the heart of the Highlands to the heart of the Hills. Held at the Mount Barker oval, less than half an hour_x0019_ s drive from the city, this all-ages event encompasses the best of Celtic dance, music and sport. The main arena at the oval will be a continuous hub of activity, with demonstrations of Country Scottish Dancing and Celtic broadsword displays. The Gathering will also host various contests, as Pipe Bands, Highland Dancers and Strong Men come to compete, perform and display their amazing skills. The South Australian Pipe Band Association 2011 Championships bring together bands from across South Australia and interstate, culminating in the magnificent massed pipes and drums at the opening and closing ceremonies. The 2011 Strong Men competition sees a variety of unique events, such as heavy stone lifting, ute pulling and other things you definitely shouldn_x0019_ t try at home! Meanwhile, South Australia_x0019_ s premier Highland Dancing competitors will leap and fling their way throughout the day_x0019_ s events at the dance stage. But the fun activities aren_x0019_ t just for the serious competitors, there_x0019_ s also plenty for everyone to try, including traditional Highland Games such as the Tug-O-War and Caber Tossing. There_x0019_ s also plenty to see and do around the oval, with lots of interesting stalls and children_x0019_ s activities. You might even be able to catch yourself some haggis! It would not be a _x0018_ Gathering_x0019_ without bringing together the various clan groups and Scottish societies from across South Australia. They will be available to provide information about their history, background and whether you might be a long-lost relative!
