World's End Barbeque. This is a series of paintings that, as the title suggests, plays with concepts both geographic and apocalyptic. In presenting the polar regions as an improbable setting for an 'Aussie' barbeque, the works reference Douglas Adams' book The Restaurant at the End of the Universe* where customers eat their meals while watching the demise of the universe unfold as entertainment. The people in these paintings, too, are absorbed by their own pursuits. They remain oblivious to the surrounding landscape which fades like wallpaper into the background. Using a combination of flat patterned backdrops, linear abstraction, figurative images and an unlikely palette, the works merge revelry with the ridiculous, and nonchalance with impending doom.
