Hot on the heels of a busy year here and abroad, Melbourne alt-country 'n roots favourites Sal Kimber & The Rollin' Wheel hit the stage for two big shows at this year's Fringe, teaming up with local comrades Huckleberry Swedes. Sal Kimber and The Rollin' Wheel have emerged as frontrunners in the new wave of Australian alt-country and roots, offering an authentic and exciting take on an Australian tradition. Hailing from the mountain valleys of Victoria, Sal's music has been recognised with numerous awards, including 2010 Victorian Female Vocalist of the Year at the Victorian & National Country Music Awards. The last 12 months have been busy ones for Sal and her band, having performed at some of the country's finest festivals including Port Fairy Folk Festival and National Folk Festival, toured Canada and supported the likes of Kasey Chambers and Felicity Urquhart. Huckleberry Swedes are an amalgam of soul, blues, rock and country. They are five guys and a few more instruments who have travelled dusty roads and deluged flood plains to present music prepared with undeniable discernment and love to you. From small rooms to festival stages, Huckleberry Swedes have seen it all and lived to tell their tale in song, taking every day observations through a traveller's mind before delivering them in a sweet, harmony laced package to your ear. Fans from Lismore to Margaret River will attest that these guys are the real deal, and Lucky Oceans from ABC Radio National agrees when he writes, "Not since Cold Chisel has a group come roaring out of South Australia with such a powerful, originally written crop of roots rock."
