Past work has been described as: _x001C_ An experience that is at once absolutely familiar, and entirely mysterious._x001D_ - The Melbourne Age _x001C_ Sublime & a beautiful one-woman show brought to aching life._x001D_ - Melbourne Herald Sun _x001C_ In this superbly written work the actor moves from scene to scene and character to character with an ease that is absolutely astounding. Truly a must see show._x001D_ - Montreal Gazette _x001C_ As good, interesting, and unforgettable as anything I_x0019_ ve ever seen at any Fringe fest. It_x0019_ s unique and brilliant and not to be missed._x001D_ - Montreal Hour Of The Causes of Wonderful Things explores what happens when five children disappear from a small town and the world of the dead begins to impact on the world of the living. Written and performed by Talya Rubin, an award winning, Montreal-born, Sydney-based performer and co-produced by Vitalstatistix, this visionary new solo work combines a powerful text with a unique visual language. Working with an overhead projector, large format negatives, miniature dioramas and an immersive sound design by Hayley Forward, Of The Causes of Wonderful Things is a darkly beautiful theatre installation. The work premiered at Brisbane Festival_x0019_ s Under The Radar in September 2010, and went on to be performed at LiveWorks, Performance Space, Sydney and at The Newcastle Poetry Prize Festival in The Lockup Cultural Centre in November 2010. Douglas Leonard from RealTime, Australia called it: _x001C_ richly textured, deeply poetic ... a pure performer_x0019_ s piece, Rubin was in absolute control of her material._x001D_ Talya has toured with her original solo plays, Ariadne_x0019_ s Thread and The Girl With No Hands to festivals in Adelaide, Melbourne, Montreal, Prague and Toronto. Ariadne_x0019_ s Thread received a five-star review in the Advertiser and played to sold out houses in the Adelaide Fringe. The Advertiser wrote of the work: "Extraordinary must-see piece of theatre...the writing is out of this world. 5/5" Past performances have been nominated for a MECCA (Montreal English Critics Circle Award) for best new text in Montreal, named as one of the top ten shows of the Montreal Fringe two years in a row and chosen as one of the _x001C_ Outstanding performances_x001D_ of the Summerworks Festival, Toronto by NOW magazine. "As a poet, Talya won the national Bronwen Wallace Award in Canada for most promising poet under the age of 35 and won the Performance Poetry award at the Melbourne Poetry Festival. She was recently shortlisted for the Winston-Collins/Descant prize for best Canadian Poem of 2011. The work is a collaboration with sound designer, Hayley Forward who works with the Parachutes for Ladies, creating works from humming choirs, to self-help audio guides, large-scale pseudo musicals, and video installations. The piece was directed and co-devised by Nick James whose unique filmic vision was instrumental to the making of the work. Special thanks to: Jodi Essery, Zoe Coombs Marr, Russell Emerson, Justine Shih Pearson, Nicola Gunn, Janie Gibson, Julieanne Campbell, Nikki Heywood and Rufus Wainwright for feedback on the work.
