Cabaret
Presented by:
ALFERINK ARTS MANAGEMENT IN ASSOCIATION WITH LOOSE CANON ART SERVICES AND ADELAIDE FRINGE.
Wakaid Girl Lyndhurst Kid is a unique story about growing up in a black and white world. It is a surprising and illuminating view of contemporary Australian life that melds the culture and traditions of the Torres Strait with life in the desert outback. It is a reconciliation story, an Australian story which brings together the cultural dance and song with contemporary music and storytelling. Critics and audiences have succumbed to the honest and irresistible charms of Wakaid Girl Lyndhurst Kid. _x001C_ If anyone has a decent yarn to tell about their life, it is Diat Alferink_x001D_ _x0013_ Matt Byrne, The Sunday Mail _x001C_ Alferink is a highly charismatic and engaging performer. Her journey is our journey, and one we feel compelled to take_x001D_ _x0013_ Louise Nunn, The Advertiser Diat_x0019_ s story is one of coming to terms with black and white in her own home, in the town where she lives, in the wider world when she moves to the city, and in herself. She is not one, or the other, she is both. Diat_x0019_ s mother, Diat _x0018_ Daisy_x0019_ Alferink nee Sagigi was born on Badu Island in the Torres Strait. She is an island woman who ended up living Outback. Her battles with racist attitudes, with alcohol and with white institutions are profoundly moving as well as hilarious. Diat_x0019_ s father is talc stone sculptor and bush philosopher known as _x0018_ Talc Alf. Back in Holland his parents had harboured Jews fleeing from Nazi Germany. Talc Alf inherited their strong principles and generosity of spirit. No matter how little he had for himself and his family, there was always enough to help someone out. _x0018_ Talc Alf_x0019_ is listed as one of the 100 Australian eccentrics you must meet. What is extraordinary about Diat_x0019_ s life and her writing is that what endures is not the bitterness, the anger, the pain, it is the goodness of people who in spite of themselves remain generous, loving and proud. A Desert Fringe 2012 exclusive - Wakaid Girl Lyndhurst Kid is a special treat not to be missed.
