I aim to discover the extraordinary in the ordinary by exploring the materiality of simple, everyday objects. By experimenting with these materials inherent qualities I aspire to create new and interesting forms. Repetitive processes in my artwork allow these forms to grow and take a life of their own. Driven from patterns and shapes in the natural environment, my installations accumulate organically to create a space in which the viewer can let their mind wonder, to contemplate their own imagination. The French philosopher Gaston Bachelard inspires me greatly with his ideas on space and the imagination. He discusses spaces in the home and how staring at the ceiling, out the window or into a corner all hold an intimacy and refuge that leads towards imaginative thoughts. The simplest images can sometimes create the vastest imaginings in out minds, as one will always feel there is more to be seen than what is offered. Elsewhere explores this notion, 'We do not see it start, and yet it always starts the same way, that is, it flees the object nearby and right away it is off, elsewhere, in the space of elsewhere' (Poetics of Space pp184)
