Central Standard Theatre - Kansas City make their Australian debut with their totally authentic, critically acclaimed production Alfred Uhry_x0019_ s 1988 Pulitzer Prize winning play. Set against the backdrop of discrimination in America_x0019_ s Deep South, _x0018_ Diving Miss Daisy_x0019_ chronicles the unlikely relationship between Daisy, a wealthy, strong-willed Southern matron and her quietly indomitable Black chauffeur, Hoke. Both employer and employee are outsiders, Hoke because of the color of his skin, Miss Daisy because she is Jewish in a WASP-dominated society. Hoke gently endeavours to fathom Miss Daisy's cloistered inability to grasp the social changes that are sweeping the South in the 1960s while Miss Daisy struggles to comprehend the indignance of the Civil Rights movement. Towards the end of their 25 year acquaintance, in an extraordinarily moving final chapter, they both eventually recognise that their relationship is much more significant and their mutual understanding, totally profound. Central Standard Theatre breathes honesty, authenticity and passion into the lives of these conflicted yet endearing individuals. _x001C_ The Central Standard Theatre production of Alfred Uhry's _x0018_ Driving Miss Daisy_x0019_ placed a lump in my throat, even though I'd seen the play before. Even though I'd seen the movie. Even though I knew my buttons were being pushed& But every now and then you see actors who so thoroughly inhabit their roles that they force you to look at the play in a new way, and that's what the CST production does& The humor is so sublime and the personalities so charmingly eccentric that the play's power sneaks up on you_x001D_ . _x0013_ Robert Trussell, Kansas City Star.
