Although very comfortable with a screen printing squeegee in his hands, Julian Lee likes nothing more than to release his creativity in other methods too. He is the designer and manager of Hot Cross Culture, a t-shirt label and screen printing service operating for over a decade. Hot Cross Culture has designs inspired by music, culture, faith and the street. He seeks to translate those passions into gritty, edgy pieces that speak of the beauty that can be found in the roughness. Often using found items that have been discarded on the street as his canvases, and using some unconventional approaches to delivering an image, there is a sense of spontaneity and edginess to his work. Select designs from Hot Cross Culture clothing are available at Urban Cow Studios (Frome Road) and Sanctuary Surfers (Waymouth Street), both in the city. Also check Hot Cross Culture on facebook. Incorporating elements of lowbrow, street art and fashion, Josh Routley pushes beyond the norms to create his own unique style. Well adept at fashion, screen printing and t-shirt artforms, (this exhibition) is allowing another of Josh's passions to be released onto the public in the form of canvas art. He is innovative in his approaches to mediums, methods and themes, but never becomes inaccessible in his style. An emerging young talent, come watch his star rise, and get in on the ground floor before it is too late!
