_x001C_ pumping like a steam locomotive_x001D_ THE ADVERTISER _x001C_ Unquestionably world class_x001D_ THE INDEPENDENT WEEKLY _x001C_ The enthusiasm and virtuosity with which they played was infectious, and without having heard any of the material before this was the best night out I_x0019_ ve had for quite a while_x001D_ RIPITUP Marmalade Circus return to their favourite Adelaide venue for the 2012 Adelaide Fringe with a new show, a new vitality and a bunch of new songs. Sparked by the creativity and originality of their new drummer Jarrad Payne, Marmalade Circus are upping the quirk-factor with a show that will take you through the mind of the Marmalade. This will not be a jazz-free zone, but the jazz will be one that draws you in and takes you on a journey, not just a series of long, drawn-out, self-indulgent solos. There are more Afro grooves this year, more Arabic vibes and, for the first time a touch of Hip-Hop will enter the fray_x0014_ but there will still be plenty of those trademark latino rhythms! Some of the old songs are back, such as those celebrating fruit, small instruments, crazy dogs, and third world superheroes. New songs have been written that reflect the times we live in_x0014_ but the heaviness won_x0019_ t last for too long as there is plenty of new music that will put a smile on your face and a groove in your toes. The unique character of each individual musician in the sextet will be explored through feature songs that highlight their talents: Jon Hunt_x0019_ s clarinets will get a high-flying workout; Tom Pulford_x0019_ s saxes will get deep into your soul; Warren Heading_x0019_ s brass will blow your head off; Shireen Khemlani_x0019_ s basses will bring you back to earthiness; Jarrad Payne_x0019_ s drums will speak to you in new languages and mferguson_x0019_ s piano/accordion/melodica/mbira will tingle your ivories. Expect a few surprises as the band take a free-er, more jazz-like approach to their music, with more spontaneity and more risks! And as always the stage will be adorned by an array of assorted instruments which will be tamed most ably by the enormously talented Marmalade Circus-folk.
