Sons & Mothers
Theatre
Presented by:
NO STRINGS ATTACHED THEATRE OF DISABILITY
From director Alirio Zavarce: "When my mum passed away in 2005, I returned from Venezuela and went straight to work with the Men's Ensemble at No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability. As I entered the workshop all the guys understood my pain. We all had mothers, some had lost theirs, some lived with theirs, some couldn't imagine what it would be like to not have mum in their world. I was greeted, one at the time, by each member of this amazing group of men, and the common words were, I'M REALLY SORRY ABOUT YOUR MUM & I KNOW WHAT IT IS LIKE. These men had been collaborating with me for over five years. All of the sudden we found another commonality: we are a group of men, we are performers ... and we share the love for the women who gave us birth. From my own experience of having a sibling with an acquired intellectual disability and sight impairment, I have witnessed the love, care, fighting for my brother's rights (including his right to live), and the amazing bond that my Mother and my brother shared. I therefore became interested in the most significant relationship with a woman that a lot of men with disability will ever have in their life: Mother. Mothers for me are the heroes of this story: many have fought for the right of these men to exist, have battled sickness and injuries, have stood up for the rights of their sons, have looked after them. And their biggest fear is, WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN I'M GONE? In late 2009, Abner, Ben, Damien, Duncan, Kym, Ricki, Ryan and I finally set out on our journey to explore this most intimate and complex relationship for a man with a disability -- his relationship with his Mum. SONS & MOTHERS is our theatrical exploration of this amazing group of woman from their Sons' perspectives. Come to the Queens Theatre and share our stories."
