Ripple is a dance-based extension of the RiAus Adelaide Reef which celebrates the intersection of art, higher geometry, handicraft and environmental sustainability. Ripple was first inspired by the vibrant colours and rich textures of the RiAus Adelaide Reef Project, a satellite project of the worldwide Institute for Figuring (IFF) Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef. Dance movement has been created by exploring the concepts that drive the Crochet Coral Reef project. At the root of the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef is hyperbolic geometry, a concept in mathematics which describes a form of space. An infinite number of straight lines which curve away from each other create a structure which can be seen in the ruffled shapes of coral. Representing this form of space had been a challenge to mathematicians until 15 years ago when Dr Daina Taimina created a successful and robust model using crochet. This has since become the accepted way to visualise hyperbolic space, causing a wonderful intersection of higher mathematics and feminine handicraft. In 2005 Los Angeles mathematician Margaret Wertheim and her sister Catherine, took Taimina's perfect crocheted hyperbolic form and began to introduce imperfections. By mutating the pure pattern they created structures which were more organic and closely resembled the natural coral reef. Their woolly reef is a testimony to the significance and vulnerability of the Earth's living reefs which are at the heart of our ecosystem. The impact of seeing a reef constructed from yarn resonates with people all over the world, and since 2006, satellite projects have been facilitated by the IFF in 4 continents. The RiAus Adelaide Reef Project involved 250 Adelaide people crocheting in workshops, their homes, work places, trains, buses and crafting groups to create unique and beautiful marine organisms to contribute. Choreographer, Kirsty Duncan, had a vision of the vivid woolly coral-scape being energised with movement. A project with such depth and substance provided a rich source of material to create dance movement which was developed through workshops that explored the concepts of geometry and hyperbolic space. Choreography was inspired by the gestures of crocheting and the path of the wool, the spirit of craft revival and the wonderful power of community, and, of course, the beauty of coral and the marine world, its amazing characteristics as an organic structure and its tragic devastation. In Ripple, you will enter a submersed world and be captivated by the profusion of colour created by a reef made entirely of yarn. Enjoy a glass of wine as you get up close and explore the reef, discovering the intricacies as you're lilted by haunting live cello. Gain an insight into the project through a short film before the dance transports you further from your normal life above sea level. PLUS SCHOOLS EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP AND PERFORMANCE 19 March, 10.30am & 12.30pm - 90mins With the strong educational themes wrapped up in this project we are holding a special showing of the performance for upper primary school groups, with a science presentation and a fun, dynamic movement workshop.
