It starts with a sigh and ends with a gasping for breath. 'A Grim Era' is the debut production from Melbourne's Smallpox Theatre. Dark, twisted and unreservedly surreal, this black comedy melds puppetry, mime, clowning and physical theatre to explore the tragic reality of love eternal. With a sweet sense of nostalgia our two characters, Isn_x0019_ t and Is, pull the audience into their poetic world of romantic monotony. Tired, tattered and at the end of their tethers, they struggle to determine where one ends and the other begins. Like molasses trickling down the tail of an old dead cat, _x0018_ A Grim Era_x0019_ is a sickly sweet and visually stunning depiction of what is a rather sticky situation.
