Jungle Phillips is a prolific Adelaide artist who has an instantly recognisable technique. Through sophisticated use of colour and composition, Jungle uses the human form to relate the tales of his unconscious. Bold faces filled with joy, melancholy or meditation are combined with his own figurative text to engaging effect. Jungle was born in Tasmania in 1956 and raised by his father and grandmother. He moved to St Kilda as a young man, where he inherited the moniker Jungle (bikie slang for _x0018_ scatterbrain.). He moved to Adelaide in the early 1990s. Jungle produces more than 1000 paintings each year, adorning his home and surrounds with his completed works. He also paints his clothes. Jungle says _x001C_ I love to paint, and become the picture. I lose myself often when painting& which is all the time_x001D_ . There is a clarity and confidence about Jungle_x0019_ s paintings and the enthusiasm with which he works is infectious. His creations have been likened to that of French-Egyptian mystic surrealist Ody Saban, and Howard Finster, maker of folk and outsider art.
