Theatre Beating presents... SQUIDBOY A Solo Show by Trygve Wakenshaw Squidboy began his life as an auxiliary percussionist for the 13 piece funk band The Hot Grits. He was a wriggly mix of playful physicality, absolute lies, aquatic pride and childish mischief. Squidboy the show is about an imaginary friend who makes imaginary friends who make imaginary enemies who threaten to destroy him in a very real way. The imagination is a beautiful playground in which the laws that govern the real world can be laid aside to achieve anything we'd like. As we grow older the police officers of our rational thought put up barricades and cleverly kettle our dreams for our own safety. We can still slip past them if we want, but it's a difficult world to live in. Whenever we see art, or hear a story, we are briefly let through the gates and allowed to play in that green grassed playground again. This show is my attempt at thinking about this. Trygve Wakenshaw trained with Philippe Gaulier in Paris, has attended workshops hosted by Complicite, and now lives and works in London. He began working as an actor, devisor, performer in New Zealand and formed the company Theatre Beating with his great friend Barnie Duncan. Trygve's unique physicality and playfulness onstage are great things to watch. _x001C_ But the star of the show is undoubtedly Trygve Wakenshaw as sprite Ariel. He's a sinister shape covered in muslin cloth who limberly climbs roof rafters and drops from the ceiling seemingly unhampered by stiff human bones and muscle. Even with his face obscured he is compelling._x001D_ _x0013_ Shannon Huse (NZ Herald), review of Trygve in The Tempest, 2008.
