Presented by:
ARRANGEMENT WITH HAL LEONARD AUSTRALIA PTY LTD, ON BEHALF OF THE DRAMATISTS PLAY SERVICE, INC NEW YORK AND BLUE LANE PRODUCTIONS
I Am My Own Wife is a 1 Actor : 35 Character Pulitzer-winning play based on interviews conducted by playwright Doug Wright. The work began in 1992 but took ten years to come to the stage in New York where it was an instant hit. A Berlin transvestite who killed her father and survived the Nazi and Communist regimes tells all to an american playwright: how she kept the only surviving Weimar gay bar running in her basement until the Wall came down;, and how sex, love and furniture-smuggling flourished in the concrete underground of East Berlin. The themes are reality versus perception, the role of art under repression, necessary fictions, self-conscious theatricality, the moral costs of survival. the solo actor is English ex-soldier charles Mayer, who trained at London's Guildhall and recently moved here with his Adelaideian wife after 4 years in Shanghai working in theatre and film, and as the host of a cabaret club and a tv show. 'A story that is both moving and intellectually absorbing' bruce Weber, New York Times 'The supremely talented Charles Mayer not only owns the stage, but each and every character he embodies' frances arnold, Smart Shanghai Image 3rd Culture Theatre
