Eyre Peninsula is a tough place in which to make art. To survive and develop as an artist it takes a special kind of commitment. The region, so far removed from perceived centres of culture with their galleries and art schools, demands that its artists be very self-reliant and resourceful. But it gives much in return as a place which offers a sense of freedom from urbanised life, access to landscapes of spectacular beauty and traditional significance, and the knowledge or sense of belonging to this place, known to many as the ‘West Coast.’ For these reasons the experience of living on Eyre Peninsula continues to leave a deep imprint on artists who work there, or on artists for whom that experience will always be embedded within their practice. This project invites selected artists from across the region and from different cultural and personal perspectives to explore and communicate the complexities of this ‘tough love’ affair from which there is ultimately no walking away, no letting go. Tough Love is an exhibition of outstanding works of art that authentically represent each artist as creatively talented, aspirational and above all capable of making art works that will engage everyone.
