Open from 11th February 2013-31st March 2013, the exhibition 'It was red, so I had to press it' is a selection of new paintings by emerging artist Kate Filsell. Presented by the Mermaid Art School, this collection of work showcases the artist's bold, gutsy mark making and expressive use of colour. Kate is known for her confronting, eerie portraiture. Using oil on canvas, or board, her work has been compared to Francis Bacon and to Ben Quilty, in both its thick application of medium and its treatment of the figure. Inspired by the recent Prado Madrid exhibition at the Queensland Art Gallery, this exhibition showcases brand new paintings by the emerging artist. Kate is in her final year of a Fine Arts degree at the University of South Australia and she has also been painting and drawing for the last 20 years.
