The Silence of Nothing
Dance
Presented by:
LIFT DANCE THEATRE
A year in development, The Silence of Nothing began from the idea that ‘silence’ and ‘nothing’ are impossibilities. To say that ‘nothing happened’ denies the small moments that are part of everyone’s lives. The dancers workshopped and explored what it meant to be both an individual in a space and to share that space with a crowd that has a collective identity with its own rules. Drawing upon many other art forms, this unique work borrows ideas from sculpture, painting, video and physical theatre but remains rooted in dance. The Colin Griffin Trio wrote the score and features electric violinist Mai Ly Irvine playing live on stage with the dancers. The graphic animation and film was designed by Alan Todd and Veronica Buhagiar. Lift Dance Theatre originated as a collaboration between dancer/choreographer Erin McAnna and theatre designer Alan Todd to explore ideas in an extended format for public performance. Part of the Adelaide Fringe since 2008 it has debuted two new works in each year since then. Two of those works were designed to be performed in the open and all have explored ideas of time and memory. Lauren Cox took over as choreographer and co-artistic director in 2011.
