Saffron Avenue does more than pay homage to the greats from the 60’s folk revival. Ballads are re-packaged with distinctly Melbourne sounds & time signatures. Put together in 2012 by Mandy Connell- the group has three pretty women's with identifiably trad vocal styles. With heavy soul and a light jazz influence- Lindsey Meldrum, Rowena Wise & Mandy Connell take songs from Steel Eye Span, Richard Thompson, Jolie Holland, the Imagined Village and make you wana dance. Electric bass and full drums pack a punch and raise the volume to make you think you’re watching a mainstage act at the original Port Fairy Folk Festival. Saffron’s rhythm section also form part of Tully on Tully and the boys are in each others heads and on a wavelength that drives inspiring time shifts and rhythm changes. Selling out at Wesley Anne in Melbourne in September and picking up a fan base fast, these guys are not to be missed. if you’ve been paying attention lately you’ll have seen some awesome things come out of the newest British folk ‘Revival’- this is something else again. Check it out.
