East, A Woman Shifting On Time Axis…, combines politics, poetry and female consciousness with a certain oriental touch. Tan explores what Chinese traditional teachings have imposed on eastern women such as footbinding. The dancers wear three-inch golden lotus shoes, which act as the symbol of how the roles of eastern women shift and transform through time. The choreography, therefore, is based on shoes, a symbol of the dominance and attempts to bring the audience to reevaluate their understanding of this civilization and where it has been and how it is today though the status of women.
