The Second lady is the fictional Mrs Erskine, wife of US senator who is running for vice president. She stands in for her husband at a luncheon and begins to give his speech on 'volunteerism' only to find that some of the pages have been left in a cab. She improvises and the public face gives way to the private conscience.
