The importance of a Festival fringe

This was one of the first academic articles in the media to link the Festival with a fringe movement in it's own right. Justin McDonnell discusses the Edinburgh Fringe before launching into a comment on the struggle that unsponsored fringe activities faced increasingly and concludes that it was time for the Festival itself to develop a "nose for the frontiers of art rather than the mainstream".
